Jaipur: The department of dramatics in the University of Rajasthan is facing numerous challenges — from lack of infrastructure to people breaking into the department building.
The department lacks basic infrastructure as the main building only has three classrooms for students. The main stage has serious lighting issues with no proper greenroom and storeroom to keep the props and materials. The department had a library, but due to lack of maintenance, there was a termite outbreak and the library had to be shifted to the main library of the university.
“The university has no local fund, all applications go through the vice-chancellor and registrar who take a lot of time to give their nod. The vice-chancellor has always been in support of the department but all applications have to be sanctioned by the state government. It's been a long time since we filed requests for coolers, furniture and other equipment but the delay is from the government's end,” said Dr. Archana Srivastva, head of the dramatics department.
“There are some serious water problems in the main building of the department as well. These are the small things we have to struggle for on a daily basis. I don’t understand why the government doesn’t pay attention to our request, they think that we are an unpopular department which is a huge setback from their side. Whenever we put on a show, we are always short on budget. Proper light and sound equipment are not provided to the department which leads to demotivation amongst the students. But still the faculty always tries its best to provide us with exposure and help us in every way they can'' added Chitrar Mishra, a masters student from the department.
