The 2022 Commonwealth Games is going to start from today and this year they are taking place in Birmingham. Birmingham, busiest city in United Kingdom, is set to host one of the biggest athletics events in the world, and events will be taking place at locations across the West Midlands.
While this is, of course, exciting, it may impact travel for some local people.
The Birmingham 2022 website says: “The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will reach all corners of the West Midlands. There will be so many exciting events to attend either with a ticket or for free, the atmosphere will be palpable, and we hope you will come out, support the Games and be part of it.
“However, if you live or work near a competition venue, festival site or road race event, it may impact the way you usually do things.
“To ensure a safe, secure and smooth operation, there’ll be temporary restrictions in place in the lead-up to and during the Games. These may include but not limited to:
Changes in areas, events are being hosted
The Commonwealth Games 2022 opening ceremony begins at 7pm on Thursday 28 July, and runs until 10.30pm. It is just 10 years since Danny Boyle’s London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony set the bar improbably high for those creative minds charged with masterminding such a showpiece. But Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, the man with the responsibility of Birmingham’s first-night show, claims he loves a challenge.
It is fair to say Commonwealth Games openings can be a mixed bunch – Glasgow’s was sweet, with dancing Tunnock’s teacakes, Sir Rod Stewart and teams walking out with real Scottish terriers.
Knight is a proud Brummie and has promised a show that will hero the West Midlands. His team includes novelist Maeve Clarke as head writer, rapper Joshua “RTKal” Holness as music consultant, and award-winning theatre director Iqbal Khan. Duran Duran and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi have already been announced as musical acts in a cast of 2,500.
