NEW DELHI: Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted time to Delhi Police to respond to fact-checker Mohammed Zubair’s plea against his arrest and seizure of devices in a case related to an alleged objectionable tweet.
Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav posted the matter for September 15, giving four weeks to police after its counsel sought time.
Advocate Vrinda Grover, appearing for the petitioner, informed the high court that the trial court had granted bail to him earlier this month, but urged the court to grant him relief on the plea challenging the arrest and the seizure.
Earlier this month, the high court granted two weeks to the investigating agency to file its response to the plea, which has challenged the legality and propriety of the trial court’s June 28 order granting police four days’ custody of the founder of the fact-checking website’s founder.
Zubair was arrested by Delhi Police on June 27 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through one of his old tweets. A case was registered against him under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, language etc) and 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) of IPC.
