BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has directed the Pahala police station here to register a case against a private college and take appropriate action against the persons of the institute for not issuing final degree certificates and the grade sheets of 438 passed out students of 2018-19 batch.
The rights panel passed this order on Tuesday after hearing a petition filed by activist Biswapriya Kanungo on behalf of the students. He alleged that the students have been deprived of getting their certificates despite depositing required fees with the college on the outskirts of the capital city.
After taking cognizance of the case on Monday, the commission had called for an action taken report from the college and principal of the institution was asked to appear before the commission at 3pm on Tuesday. But neither the principal nor any authorized person of the college appeared before the rights panel.

According to the report of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), despite several notices, the college has not collected the degree certificates, grade sheets and provisional certificates of the students from the university by depositing the requisite fee. This All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) recognized institution is affiliated to the BPUT.

“As the commission prima facie finds, there is an act of cheating, misappropriation of funds of the large number of students and playing hide and seek by the college authority, let this order be sent to the officer-in-charge of Pahala police station to treat this order as FIR and register case and take appropriate action against the persons responsible for that,” read the order.

The Pahala police will probe the case and submit the action taken report to the commission in the matter by the next date. The students will submit a regular complaint before the officer-in-charge along with the order copy, said the commission order.
