
Mumbai News Today Live (July 28): The state Cabinet on Wednesday approved a detailed project report (DPR), seeking Rs 39,602 crore for the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MAHADISCOM), to improve the power distribution system in a bid to make the company financially stable.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP and Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut did not appear before Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Mumbai on Wednesday. He is in New Delhi attending the Parliament session.
In other news, in the first seven months of 2022, Maharashtra has surpassed the number of cholera cases it had witnessed last year. Also, during this period, the state witnessed the highest cholera-related fatalities in the last 10 years. In pre-pandemic 2019, the state had witnessed 223 cholera cases. A year after reporting no cholera cases in 2020, the number of cases climbed to 176 in 2021. This counts as an average of 15 cases per month.
The Bombay High Court on Thursday said the menace of illegal hoardings can be stopped if political leaders and ministers, whose pictures are displayed on them, urge their followers not to do so.
A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice M S Karnik said that if political leaders and ministers indulge their followers, then such illegal hoardings will continue to be put up everywhere.
"Ministers and political leaders whose pictures are placed in these hoardings should go to the public and ask them not to do this. They (public) will listen to them," the court said.
The court further wondered what could be done when those who are in charge of governance themselves do not follow the rule of law.(PTI)
The Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray faction has filed another petition in the Supreme Court challenging the decision of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to recognise Rahul Shewale of the Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde led group as the floor leader.
A three-judge bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli is already scheduled to hear on August 1 a batch of petitions filed by the Thackeray faction in relation to several political developments in Maharashtra, before the Election Commission with regard to claim over the party and its symbol and in Parliament. The Supreme Court agreed to hear a plea challenging the cutting of trees in Mumbai's Aarey colony for a Metro car shed.
A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Surya Kant said it would take up the plea after senior advocate Gopal Shankarnarayan mentioned the matter. Shankarnarayan said cutting of trees is going on overnight despite the stay order earlier.
"We have photographs.The CJI said it will be heard by this bench. Can it be listed tomorrow?" Shankarnarayan said, adding JCBs would be operated over the weekend and the matter requires urgent hearing.
The top court then agreed to hear the matter on Friday. (PTI)
The Mumbai Police, which has booked actor Ranveer Singh on charges of obscenity for allegedly posting photographs from his nude photoshoot for Paper magazine on his Instagram account, has begun “technical investigation” into the matter.
The cyber police has also been roped in by the local Chembur police to get details like the device from which the photos were uploaded, the accounts that were involved in sharing it and the location where the photoshoot took place, sources said. Read more
With a decline in Covid-19 cases, the BMC has closed down three of its jumbo treatment facilities in Mumbai and is in the process to shut down five more.
Addition Municipal Commissioner Dr Sanjeev Kumar said that while the facilities at Dahisar, NESCO (Goregaon) and Kanjurmarg were shut earlier, orders have now been issued to shut down BKC, Richardson Crudass (Byculla), Richardson Crudass (Mulund), NSCI (Worli) and Malad jumbo centres. Read more

With rains continuing to lash parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada region in Maharashtra, government officials are concerned that it could lead to heavy crop losses, posing a challenge for the new state government.
As July comes to an end, kharif sowing in Maharashtra is at 91.54 per cent, data shared by the agriculture department has revealed. Of the total area of 142 lakh hectares, kharif sowing has taken place on 130 lakh hectares, marginally higher as compared to last year’s 127 lakh hectares. Mngroves along the state’s coastline prevented seawater ingress on the land in mangrove areas when two cyclones hit the western coast of Maharashtra in 2020 and 2021, according to a study by Pune-based NGO Shrushti Conservation Foundation.
The study found that the damage caused by Nisarga and Tauktae cyclones in mangrove and non-mangrove areas showed that the presence the coastal vegetation and mangroves resulted in reduced damage to houses in many areas (in most cases, with damage to roofs). Read more

The Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday approved a Rs 369.78 crore development plan for the Lonar crater-lake, a notified national geo-heritage monument situated in Buldhana district.
The Bombay High Court had last year directed the government to set up a development authority to preserve Lonar Lake, known as the only crater lake in the world formed by meteoric impact.
Development works will be implemented under the supervision of the Amravati divisional commissioner and will focus on the preservation of temples in the vicinity, wildlife protection, rehabilitation of encroachers and road development, an official release said here.(PTI)
Mumbai police on Wednesday arrested three persons from Surat in Gujarat for allegedly trying to extort Rs 50 lakh from a businessman here and threatening him by citing their links with gangster Chhota Shakeel, an official said.
The complainant in the case said he had given Rs 13 crore to one of the accused, but instead of repaying the money to him, the latter along with his two accomplices threatened him and tried to extort money, the police said.
The Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) of Mumbai crime branch arrested the trio, identified as Aslam Naviwala (63), Ilyas Kapadia (42) and Mirza Arif Beig (52), the official said, adding that Naviwala's son Ehtesham was wanted in the case.(PTI)
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday asked the officials to draft a long-term master-plan for providing housing to police personnel.
The chief minister held a meeting to take a stock of police housing schemes in the state during the day.
Police work during testing and challenging times for the safety of people and the government must ensure that they get affordable houses through state agencies such as MHADA, CIDCO, SRA as well cluster development schemes, he told reporters.(PTI)
A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed on Wednesday in the Bombay High Court challenging the Maharashtra government's decision to change the name of Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar.
The petition filed by Mohammed Mushtaq Ahmed, Annasaheb Khandare and Rajesh More, all residents of Aurangabad, is likely to be heard by the HC on August 1.
Notably, the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government under Uddhav Thackeray had decided to rename the city as Sambhajinagar in its last cabinet meeting on June 29 this year.(PTI)
Seven of the accused in the Amravati case have sought to be transferred from Arthur Road jail to another prison in the city. A prison official submitted a report about the incident where one of the accused was assaulted by other inmates. The special court has directed prison authorities to file a reply.

Shahrukh Pathan, an accused in the Umesh Kohle murder case, was attacked by five fellow prisoners inside Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail Saturday evening, said the police. The NM Joshi Marg police have filed a case against the attackers.
According to the police, Pathan, 25, was talking to other inmates of the jail at barrack No. 2 in circle No. 11 of the jail when the incident happened. The police said that Pathan sustained minor injuries in his hands and neck. Read more
