The X Factor UK is giving fans an inside look at how One Direction was really formed.
More than a month after former member Liam Payne claimed to be the band's leader, having said that it was formed around him, previously unseen footage of judges Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh forming the boy band has surfaced.
Celebrating the beloved boy band's 12th anniversary Fremantle Media released the never-before-seen video in which Scherzinger suggests they create "an imaginary boy group instead of just saying, 'no.'"
The group starts with a photo of Niall Horan, followed by a photo of Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. Then it comes to Liam's photo. "He was the standout audition," Cowell says before pointing over at the group of boys selected to move forward as individual acts. "You don't think he should be over there?"
"I don't think so," Scherzinger replies. "If he's the standout, then he could actually maybe be the leader." Cowell responds: "He thinks he's better than anyone else on that list."
Walsh then jumps in and agrees but adds: "He has the confidence. He's good. He's consistent."
After marvelling at the four members, the judges complete their perfect boy band with the addition of Zayn Malik.

Malik was the first to leave One Direction in March 2015. Months later, after touring as a four-person group, One Direction announced an official hiatus in August of the same year.
Since then, each member has gone on to pursue solo careers in music, with Styles the only member having branched out into film as well.
