Kanabhai Modhvadia and Ramdev Goraniya
RAJKOT: The death of a 42-year-old woman, which was claimed to be a natural one due to heart attack, turned out to be a cold-blooded murder by none other than the victim's own brother.
Kalyanpur taluka police in Devbhumi Dwarka district on Sunday arrested 35-year-old Ramdev Golaniya for killing his elder sister Sumri Modhvadia, a resident of Chandravada village of Kalyanpur, on July 20. They also arrested Sumri's brother-in-law Kanabhai Modhvadia (55) for aiding the murder and allegedly destroying evidence from the crime scene.
Police sub-inspector F B Ganganiya of Kalyanpur police station said that Golaniya suspected that Sumri, a widow, was having an affair. According to Ganganiya, on July 20, Golaniya went to Sumri's house and hit her with an iron rod on the head while she was resting on the bed. Sumri died on the spot.
Golaniya then called Kanabhai, who helped him dispose of the blood-stained bedding and clean the stains from the house and make it look like a natural death. Kanabhai also cooked up the story that Sumri died of a heart attack and insisted on cremation in Porbandar rather than the village itself.
Sumri, who died on July 20, was cremated the next day in Porbandar where her only daughter Bhumi Goraniya (20) lived. Relatives had suggested that final rites be conducted there due to heavy rain in Kalyanpur taluka.
However, during the funeral procession, Bhumi's husband Parbat Goraniya got suspicious seeing blood stains on her head. After returning from the crematorium, he confided in Bhumi about the stains and her cousin Prakash too confirmed noticing it. The same day (July 21), Bhumi approached Kalyanpur police station and submitted an application of complaint, alleging that her mother was murdered.
Bhumi stated in the complaint that when her mother's body was found she was wearing a sari, but that she always wore a nightgown while going to bed.
Bhumi had got a call from her uncle on July 20 to urgently come to Chandravada. When she and her husband reached they were informed about Sumri's death. Bhumi was told that her mother died of a heart attack.
She alleged in her complaint that the last rites of her mother were completed hurriedly. She also noticed that the mattress, pillow and rugs from her room were missing.
In her complaint, she had named Kanabhai, Golaniya and three others as suspects. During interrogation, Golaniya confessed to killing his sister as he suspected her character.
Sumri's husband had passed away about 18 months ago and her younger brother had committed suicide two months back. She owned six bighas of agricultural land and a house in the village.
