VARANASI: One of the 16 camels rescued from smugglers by police in Ramnagar area died on Sunday while another ailing camel is under treatment.
Confirming the death of a camel, district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma said that chief veterinary officer (CVO) had been directed to ensure its postmortem examination by a panel of veterinary doctors and to submit an investigation report on the cause of death, he said. The camels rescued on June 28 are in custody of Gau Gyan Foundation. Camels were injured due to their legs brutally tied with ropes by smugglers, said officials.
Ramnagar police had rescued 16 camels after arresting three smugglers, who were taking them to West Bengal from
Rajasthan, on being alerted by Gau Gyan Foundation’s R Lata Devi.
After Ramnagar police produced the arrested smugglers before the court of additional chief judicial magistrate, they were ordered on July 7 to give the custody of rescued camels to the foundation, said DM. The CVO had deployed his subordinates to assist in treatment of ailing and injured camels.
The DM said that on July 7 the ACJM court had also ordered the foundation to shift the camels to Rajasthan by bearing the cost of transportation while regional transport officer and CVO were directed to arrange transportation and fodder, respectively. The foundation did not respond against the order and reached the court again, he said adding, as the foundation did not follow the order the district administration filed an application for revision of order in the court. The administration will initiate further action as per the order of court.
