MUMBAI: The number of students bagging the top three ranks in ISC (Class 12 of CISCE) nearly trebled to 154 from 54 in 2019, the last time students appeared for all papers. With a score of 99.75%, Mumbai's Upasana Nandi, studying in a Thane school, was among 18 students in the country to bag the top rank. Eleven MMR students are among 17 from
Maharashtra to secure the top three ranks.
Overall, 99.38% of the 96,940 students passed, while the state's success rate (3,781 took the exam) was 99.76%.
The board did not release the merit list last two years- eight papers were cancelled in 2020 and no exams were held in 2021.Many schools reported several students securing 90% and above.
Mumbai student Upasana Nandi bags All-India Rank 1 along with 17 othersMumbai girl Upasana Nandi, 17, emerged as the joint national topper in the ISC results announced on Sunday. She shared the first rank with 17 other students. Nandi, whose aggregate score was 99.75%, is a student of Thane's Smt Sulochanadevi Singhania School.
Nandi, a Deonar resident, bagged the perfect score in science and mathematics and lost a mark in English. The board considers marks in English and any three subjects to tally the final score. In 2019, the board had for the first time in its 61-year history two students with 100%.
Compared to 2020 , the all-India pass percentage rose by 2.58% compared to 96.80% in 2020. The state, too, saw a rise of 1.26% in the success rate compared to 98.5% in 2020.
Schools reported a large number of students making it to the elite club of 90 percenters. While 18 students shared the first rank in the country, 58 bagged the second position and 78 stood third. Maharashtra has 17 students in the top three ranks - one at the first position, six at second and 10 at the third. Of these 17 toppers, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region boasted of 11. In 2019, only 54 students were in the all-India merit list.
"The 90%ters have jumped to over 51% this year. In 2019, it was around 35%," said Sunita George, principal, Bombay Scottish School, Powai. Of the 113 students, 58 got above 90% and all students secured over 70%. Anshul Mitra, the school topper, is the joint second ranker in the state.
Over 59% of the 294 students of Jamnabai Narsee School, Juhu, secured over 90%. "This batch of students displayed tremendous resilience, appearing for two semester exams conducted in new formats and performing exceptionally well," said principal Kalpana Patange. Their student Eshita Lalwani from the commerce stream took the third position (99.25%) in the all-India merit list.
At Santacruz's Lilavati Podar school, over 40% of the 227 students scored over 90%. "Our results are a lot better than last year. Students put in a lot of effort for the second semester, they went the extra mile," said principal Sheila Alexander.
Principals said the weightage given to the semester 2 marks helped improve scores. Full weightage was given to semester 2 (theory) marks. "The first semester results were an indicator of where the students stood. It was a wake up call for those who did not perform well," said Kalyani Patnaik, principal, Hiranandani Foundation School, Powai. Two of their students - Vrisha Surya (99.5%) and Mansi Dhyani (99.5%) made it to the merit list.
