TWTW Top10 Tech News  of the week

An announcement that was much awaited; the DoT on Wednesday approved Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel Vodafone Idea and Adani Data Networks as the final participants in India’s first ever auction of 5G spectrum.

Connected cars, smart stadiums, advanced gaming, drone delivery, cloud-connected traffic control… the possibilities are endless. As per Statista, total number of connected IoT devices globally is set to grow almost 3X from ~13.8 Bn in 2021 to 31 Bn by 2025! Only 5G can power this rise in smart, intelligent machines that can automate many rote processes and open up a radical new era of human centric technologies.

The potential for 5G impact across industries is enormous, but to realize these gains, India will need a strategic approach— I for one believe that the government must ensure proliferation of cheap spectrum which can help build value multipliers which will positively impact Indian populace for generations.

4G created a historic change, with cheaper spectrum prices leading to a breakthrough in terms of building an aspirational, Digital India. With 5G, the potential for India to take a quantum leap is several multiples higher…

Focused Story of the Week #2: Space Tech, a potential $1 Trillion Industry by 2030

There have been a couple of major announcements in this last week about space tech industry. It is highly likely that in this ‘techade’, space technologies will be one of the global changes which will disrupt the world.

Few years back, Space Tech was dominated by government agencies like NASA, Roscosmos, because of capex requirement, risk involved etc. But as cost of tech has gone down with time, a new market has opened for private players.

A collaboration of private and public sectors seems to be the sweet spot, with SpaceX being a prime example. SpaceX has carried out multiple flights for NASA and is on the verge of breaking the record for total number of launches in a year, despite the calendar year being only 7 months old!

In this new age, countries like India have unlimited opportunity. The Indian Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has started authorizing Indian private firms, marking the beginning of private space sector launches in India. 100+ startups are active in this sector, building satellites, launch vehicles, even designing in-orbit refuellers for satellites. All I can say is: “watch this space for IN-SPACe”!
