Dibrugarh: After 18 days, the search teams have traced and rescued eight of the 19 missing construction workers engaged in a road construction project of Border Road Organisation (BRO) in Arunachal Pradesh’s Kurung Kumey district.
Kurung Kumey SP Abhimanyu Poswal claimed that the workers, all from neighbouring Assam, fled their camps on July 5 due to delay in payment of wages by the sub-contractors and lack of basic amenities and lost their way in the deep forest.
Officials said the workers were rescued from the deep gorges and wild jungles of the area in an extremely emaciated and starving condition. Five of them, whose condition is critical, were airlifted by an IAF helicopter to Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) at Naharlagun in the state.
Kurung Kumey deputy commissioner Nighee Bengia said while four workers were rescued on Friday evening, three more were rescued on Saturday. One more worker was rescued at 4.45pm on Saturday in an extremely critical condition. He added that the rescued workers have said two of their fellow workers have died whose bodies they have left behind. But the search teams are yet to track down the bodies, the DC said.
