Mysuru: Three weeks after the ban on single-use plastic was imposed, the Hotel Owners’ Association has urged the implementing agency to stop levying fines on business establishments, including hotels, stating that they don’t have knowledge about how to identify single-use plastic. Association president C Narayanagowda stated in a release, that based on newspaper and media reports, of late, local officials are imposing fines of Rs 3,000- Rs 10,000, for the use of single-use plastic, which he termed as unscientific. “There is no awareness created about single-use plastic. Even the officials imposing the fines do not know about it. Without providing alternatives to plastic, or educating the public about it, it is unjust to collect fines,” he said. “Hoteliers are already in trouble, following the Covid-19 pandemic, and yet they are running their business after paying various types of taxes. Their earnings are not even Rs 3,000. Under such conditions, paying fines and running a business has been difficult for them,” he said.
