NEW DELHI: Following the arrest of
West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case, the
Trinamool Congress on Saturday said that it will take action against the minister if he is proven guilty.
Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee were arrested on Saturday in a case linked to the alleged teacher recruitment scam in the state. The arrests came hours after Rs 20 crore was recovered from Mukherjee's house.
The TMC also attacked the
BJP for using the ED for political vendetta.
"We are watching the situation and have faith in the judiciary. The TMC will not tolerate any discrepancy or malpractice in the party or in the government. The TMC will act after the judiciary comes out with its verdict," said senior party leader Firhad Hakim.
"In today's situation, it seems like the ED is being run by the BJP. If Suvendu Adhikari [BJP leader in WB] is saying that a lot of things are going to be found in the future even before ED is giving any statement. It means that ED is politically influenced by the BJP," he added.
Chatterjee sent to 2-day custodyChatterjee was sent to two-day custody after he was arrested in connection with the recruitment scam. The central probe agency had sought a 14-day custody of the Bengal minister. He will now be produced before a special PMLA court on Monday.
Chatterjee was formally arrested after a marathon interrogation of over 26 hours that began Friday morning in which more than a dozen documents were seized from his residence in Naktala. Mukherjee, a close aide of the minister was also arrested on Saturday evening.
ED recovered Rs 20 crore in unaccounted cash from Mukherjee's residence in south Kolkata a day back.
