The historic Madikeri Fort housed more than 30 government offices till 2019, when most of these were shifted
Madikeri: Madikeri Fort is being repaired at a cost of Rs 10.7 crore. Archaeological Survey of India has taken up the project as the building is a protected monument.
The exterior portion of the building is a fort that includes the structure of elephants, and the interior portion is the old palace.
Following a petition filed by J S Virupakshaiah, a resident of Aluru Siddapur in Kodagu through advocate Ravindranath Kamat, the high court had instructed the government to sanction the grant for repairs. The petitioner had stated that the old structure may collapse if not maintained properly. The court had directed the department to protect the buildings and to repair the collapsing portions immediately.
During the revamp, the newly added office rooms attached to the old fort and palace will be razed, revealed the sources. The fort and palace were built during 17th century and then renovated during 18th century by the then rulers.
There were more than 30 government offices in the fort building and after the offices were shifted in 2019. The court running in the building will soon be shifted to a new building, said the sources. The old building will be demolished and new structure will come up, they added.
