THANE: A jewellery unit in Vartak Nagar area of Thane was robbed of valuables collectively worth Rs 41 lakh after the unidentified robbers drilled their way into the store after breaking the wall of an adjoining shop, police informed on Friday.
The Vartak Nagar police informed that the incident took place in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, when the accused damaged the wall of a tyre shop and later entered the jewellery store located next to it after drilling into the common wall.
“The accused stole 652 gm of gold and 40 kg of silver collectively worth Rs 41 lakh from the shop. Based on a complaint lodged by the shop owner, a case has been registered under sections 457 (house trespass) and 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code,” informed a Thane police official.
It may be recalled that another jewellery unit in the same area had been robbed in similar fashion last January. Three men posing as fruit merchants had leased a shop adjoining the jewellery unit and later drilled their way into it through the common wall and decamped with ornaments valued at over Rs 1.3 cr.
Senior inspector Sadashiv Nikam at the Vartak Nagar police station said they suspect the handiwork of an organised interstate gang behind the crime and are investigating the same.
