1984 anti-Sikh riots: One more arrested by SIT, tally so far 28

Kanpur: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the anti-Sikh riots, arrested one more accused in the killing of five Sikh men in three incidents, on late Wednesday night.
The SIT has so far arrested 28 persons in the anti-Sikh riot case.
SIT DIG Balendu Bhushan said that the SIT raided a hideout in the city on Wednesday night. “Kamal Singh, a resident of Gujaini, an accused of killing five Sikhs in three incidents was arrested. This is the 28th arrest made by the SIT in 1984 riot cases,” said the DIG.
On late Tuesday night, the SIT had arrested five accused identified as Shriram alias Baggad (65), Mustakeem (70), Anil Kumar Pandey (61), Abdul Wahid (61) and Irshad (60).
A total of 127 Sikhs were killed in riots in the aftermath of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination by her security personnel.
Nearly, 40 cases of murder, robbery and dacoity were registered, of which 29 cases were closed by the police after submitting a final report. After the state government constituted an SIT for investigation, out of 29 cases that were finalized, the SIT got the evidence in 14 cases.
The SIT was set up on May 27, 2019, after the Apex Court issued notice to the state government in August 2017 on a petition seeking SIT probe into the anti-Sikh riots.
