NEW DELHI: Accusing the
BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of hypocrisy over “har ghar tirganga” campaign, Congress Friday said the ruling party should explain why did the RSS not hoist the tricolour at its headquarters for 52 years.
It also asked why has the Centre allowed the import of machine-made polyster flags from China, at the cost of livelihoods of people engaged in the manufacturing of handmade Khadi flags in the country.
The party was referring to a recent amendment to the Flag Code, which allow the flags to be machine-made and of polyster.
Observing the 75th anniversary of the adoption of tricolour in a social media post,
Rahul Gandhi said the national flag is a symbol of sacrifice, whose features include the fact that it should always be made of cotton, silk or khadi.
“An organization (RSS) refused to accept the flag that inspired martyrdom by many people, it did not hoist the flag at its Nagpur headquarters for 52 years, and repeatedly insulted the flag. Now, graduates of the same outfit are telling us the history of tricolor,” he mocked, referring to PM Modi’s tweet about flag’s anniversary.
He said “these people” should explain why did the RSS not hoist the flag at its headquarters for 52 years and why is the government destroying the livelihoods of people engaged in manufacturing of the national flag.
Replying to PM Modi’s tweet on the tricolor anniversary, AICC spokesman Jairam Ramesh said, “Hypocrisy Zindabad! From someone who is destroying livelihoods of those who make national flags from Khadi, once described by
Nehru as the livery of India's freedom. From someone who was a pracharak in the organisation that took 52 years to hoist the National Flag in Nagpur!”
