Surat: From Saturday onwards, you will be able to register FIRs for vehicle or mobile theft online. Top police officials claimed that through this service citizens will be able to lodge a complaint smoothly on mobile app or website.
The e-FIR service, which will be available through Citizen First mobile application or website, will be launched by Union home minister
Amit Shah in
Gandhinagar on Saturday.
A person can lodge his complaint while on the go or from the spot of incident and once reported, the complainant will be approached by police to collect exact details.
“Earlier registration of FIR took time as the complainants had to go to the police station multiple times. But now it will be the police’s responsibility to verify the claim and register the FIR after verification of various aspects,” said Ajay Tomar, city police commissioner.
The complainant will have to provide basic details of crime after which the preliminary investigation will be assigned to a police officer. The officer will verify details of the crime within 24 hours and register the FIR. If the crime has happened in the limits of some other police station the details will be sent to that police station within 72 hours.
At each stage the complainant and police officer concerned will receive SMS alerts.
“In one month the officer is supposed to complete the investigation. There is a time limit to each category and officers will have to comply with it,” Tomar said.
“The online facility is being introduced in vehicle and mobile thefts since complaints related to these are higher and common people face major problems. This will help them to register the offence smoothly and recover their valuables,” he added.
