SCB docs ace bone marrow transplant

Bhubaneswar: The clinical haematology department of SCB Medical College and Hospital successfully conducted a complicated bone marrow transplant (BMT) surgery on a patient of relapsed Hodgkin s Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.
The transplant was done on Ramakanta Pradhan, a 51-year-old lawyer from Cuttack, after preserving the stem cells for a week in - 80 degree Celsius.
“We had to preserve the stem cells for about seven days as Cryo Preservation. The patient had undergone chemotherapy for blood cancer in 2019. But the cancer relapsed in 2021 and he received further chemotherapy. Later, he was advised for BMT, ” said Dr R K Jena, BMT physician and head of the clinical haematology department.
“Drawing adequate number of stem cells from his body was a challenge, but our technicians managed do it in one attempt. ”
