Guwahati: South-Central residents can now apply for water

GUWAHATI: The South Central Guwahati water project, construction of which began a decade ago and was supposed to be completed in 2014, was partially commissioned on Thursday with the launch of a website and a mobile app by urban affairs minister Ashok Singhal.
With this, the application process has also begun.
With a capacity of 191 million litres per day, the project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is one of the four big water projects. The other three, which are under construction, are Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded South East Guwahati, Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM)-funded South West Guwahati and JICA-funded North Guwahati projects.
Addressing the launch programme, Singhal said, “The vision of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to provide clean and safe water to people of Guwahati is gradually turning into a reality. I am glad to launch the website and the mobile application for registration of consumers, to be covered in the first phase of the project.”
The project, when fully commissioned, will cover the entire Gauhati East assembly constituency and parts of the Dispur assembly constituency. Guwahati Jal Board (GJB) has a target to cover over 1.15 lakh households of the said assembly constituencies when the project is fully commissioned.
Around 3,000 households of five localities — Amiyanagar, Rudragar, Chandmari, Piyoli Phukan Nagar and Rajgarh — under the Gauhati East assembly constituency will be covered in the first phase of the project. “The remaining areas will be covered in a phased manner with the progress of the pipeline extension work,” said Pallav Gopal Jha, the managing director of the GJB.
Jha, who is also the deputy commissioner of the Kamrup (Metro), said the process of application for the household water connections will be open for 15 days from Thursday.
