A view of the flooded Verka underpath on Thursday
LUDHIANA: The three underpasses in the city, opposite Verka Milk Plant at Ferozepur Road, Lodhi Club road and newly-opened ROB/RUB at Pakhowal Road, were flooded with rainwater on Thursday, leaving commuters stuck.
Two trucks got stuck inside the underpass opposite Verka milk plant. MC officials arranged JCB machines to extricate them to restore traffic flow. The newly constructed ROB/RUB also got damaged. MC officials said they alerted the contractor, who lifted the debris. They said the contractor would fix the damaged part of the road.
Zonal commissioner Jasdev Sekhon said, “Water in underpass of ROB/RUB at Pakhowal Road drained out early as we had made all arrangements in advance while Verka and Lodhi club underpasses belong to PWD and GLADA. We had contacted them in advance to run motors to pump out rainwater. On Thursday too, I called them to the spot and motors were started, but suddenly, electricity snapped and motors stopped functioning.” Meanwhike, MC commissioner Shena Aggarwal was on leave on Thursday. She will be on leave for the next three days due to personal reasons but officials said that she was taking reports through phone on a regular basis. Also, mayor Balkar Sandhu is abroad since July 5 for a family function and is expected to return this weekend.
