Droupadi Murmu becomes India's first tribal President: Who said what

NEW DELHI: Droupadi Murmu scripted history on Thursday by becoming India's first tribal President in the one-sided contest, defeating Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha.

Narendra Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence that Droupadi Murmu will make an "outstanding" President and said India has scripted history with a daughter from a tribal community being elected to the top post.
In a series of tweets, Modi said, "India scripts history. At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote part of eastern India has been elected our President!
He congratulated Murmu on being elected to the top Constitutional post.

Amit Shah
Union home minister Amit Shah congratulated Droupadi Murmu and said it is a moment of great pride for the entire country.
In a series of tweets in Hindi, Shah said Murmu has reached this highest position of the country after fighting against the odds and this shows the immense power of our democracy.
"Coming from a very humble tribal family, NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu's election as the President of India is a moment of great pride for the entire country, I congratulate her," he said.
The home minister said the victory is a milestone in the direction of realising the resolve of 'Antyodaya' and empowerment of the tribal society.

Mamata Banerjee
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday congratulated NDA presidential nominee Droupadi Murmu after she emerged victorious in the election.
The Trinamool Congress supremo said that the country will sincerely look up to Murmu as the "Head of State to protect the ideals of the Constitution and the custodian of our democracy".
The TMC has supported Yashwant Sinha, the joint candidate of major non-BJP parties, in the election held on July 18.
"I would like to congratulate Hon'ble Presidential-Elect Smt Draupadi Murmu. The country will sincerely look up to you as the Head of State to protect the ideals of our Constitution & be the custodian of our democracy, especially when (the) nation is plagued with so many dissensions (sic)," she tweeted.
Ram Nath Kovind
President Ram Nath Kovind greeted Droupadi Murmu on her election as the next President of the country.
“Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Smt. Droupadi Murmu on being elected as the 15th President of India,” Kovind tweeted.
Naveen Patnaik
BJD president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik, who was the first non-NDA leader to extend support to the candidature of NDA presidential nominee Droupadi Murmu said her journey to the highest constitutional position of India is a “shining example of women empowerment.”
Moments after Droupadi’s victory as the 15th President of India, Naveen took to social media to congratulate her.
“Congratulate the daughter of #Odisha, Smt #DroupadiMurmu on being elected as 15th President of India. It is indeed a very proud moment for everyone in Odisha that she has been elected for the highest office in the country,” tweeted Naveen.
Basavaraj Bommai
Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai congratulated NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu for emerging victorious.
In a tweet, he said, “A matter of immense pride for every Indian in having the first woman tribal President #DroupadiMurmu. A memorable day for the country.” “We Indians are proud of our deeply ensconced democratic values. Congratulations to the newly elected President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji."
