MUMBAI: Two men who posed as brokers from Gujarat and visited a diamond merchant's office at Bharat Diamond Bourse, stole three diamonds worth Rs 3.5 crore after diverting the attention of the salesperson at the counter. The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) police are now on the lookout for the two accused, and are scanning CCTV footages from the premises to identify them.
The duo had initially made a phone call to the diamond merchant, expressing interest in purchasing the precious stones. "The accused visited the BKC office on July 7, and started checking the diamonds. They selected three stones and asked for them to be kept aside. Later, they left saying they will return in a week with the money to buy them," said BKC police inspector Rajesh Gawli.
The merchant realised the diamonds selected by the duo were missing only last Monday when they opened the box again. The businessman and other employees later scanned CCTV footages and saw the duo stealing the diamonds. A case was registered last Monday, 12 days after the theft. "A police team is now trying to trace the identity of the duo by scanning CCTV cameras installed around BKC and near railway stations," said a police officer.
A case under IPC sections 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy), 409 (breach of trust) and 419 (impersonation) has been registered.
