Guwahati: A man facing charges of cow smuggling and having links with Bangladesh-based Islamic terrorist organization Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen was killed in police firing while allegedly trying to escape from custody early on Wednesday, police said.
The accused, Adam Ali, was killed in police firing at a place between Bashbari village and Rupsi in Kokrajhar district. SP (Dhubri) Gaurav Abhijit Dilip said a police team went to catch Ali to Sagolia near the Assam-West Bengal border at 1.30 am on Wednesday. “He fled the spot on seeing the police party and crossed the border to West Bengal. The police team chased him and caught him near Cooch Behar. We have recovered a pistol from his possession,” he added.
He said after due interrogation, the police team moved to a place near Rupsi. “The accused was leading the team. At a place between Bashbari and Rupsi, the police team was ambushed suddenly and Ali tried to flee taking advantage of the situation. Police then fired at Ali to stop him from escaping. He was taken to hospital where he was declared dead. Two police constables also sustained injuries during the exchange of fire with those who ambushed the police team. All the injured were rushed to the Dhubri Civil Hospital,” he added.
