AHMEDABAD: The city cybercrime police on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old man from Isanpur for allegedly running a call centre to con US citizens. MC Jadeja, cybercrime police sub-inspector, said in the FIR that they received information that a person named Jay Trivedi, 30, a resident of Dhwani Heights in Isanpur, was running a fake call centre.
He said that he and the other cops reached Trivedi’s house and found him working on his cellphone and laptop. The FIR mentioned that when the cops reached there, Trivedi was speaking to someone in English. Jadeja said that when cops questioned Trivedi, he said that he was speaking to a US national and planned to con him.
Regarding his modus operandi, the FIR stated that Trivedi would pose as a representative of a financial firm in the US that offered easy loans. Trivedi used to offer loans ranging between $3,000 and $10,000 to US citizens, promising to get them sanctioned within two hours. Once the potential victim got convinced about the loan offers, he would seek gift card details from them and cheat them.
The FIR also stated that another accused named Satish Baljt, who is on the run, used to process the gift cards and convert them into cash for Trivedi. Sources said that Trivedi was caught by the city police in 2014 for running a fake call centre on CG Road. He has been booked for cheating, forgery and under the IT Act.
