Ludhiana: Khanna police arrested a head constable, deployed for security of former Congress MLA Lakhvir Singh Lakha, with 200 gm of opium on Wednesday.
Police said following a tip-off, Baljeet Singh, 45, was arrested from a checkpost set up near Ghudani Kalan village.
Deputy superintendent of police (Payal) Harsimrat Singh said head constable Baljeet Singh was deputed as a gunman with former Congress MLA from Payal Lakhvir Singh Lakha. He was arrested with 200 gm opium. Baljeet confessed that he had been consuming opium and had started smuggling the drug about three years ago.
“Baljeet used to visit different villages when Lakha was an MLA. There, he came in contact with some migrants who were also drug addicts. Baljeet offered them opium. Being a cop, he was quite confident that he would not face any action. However, the police got information about his involvement in smuggling of opium and nabbed him. Baljeet used to provide opium to migrants belonging to Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh,” the DSP added.
On asking about the role of the former MLA, as he was also once accused by his relatives and family members for spreading the drugs menace, DSP Harsimrat said, “As of now, no role of the former MLA has been found.”
A case has been registered against the cop under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.
