UDUPI: Four people died while an equal number were injured after a speeding ambulance rammed into the Shiroor tollgate under Byndoor police station limits on Wednesday. One of the injured is in critical condition.
The deceased were identified as Gajanana Naik (45), the patient, Manjunath Naik (40), Lokesh Naik (42) and Jyothi (32).
Police sources told TOI that about eight people, including the driver, were travelling in the ambulance from Honnavar to Udupi with the patient Gajanana who was under treatment at a private hospital in Honnavar. He was being taken to a hospital in Udupi for further treatment.
Toll gate staffer hurt, but out of danger
When the ambulance neared the tollgate, the staff thought that the vehicle had had a brake failure, and rushed out to clear the barricades. The driver applied brakes to avoid hitting the tollgate pillar, following which the ambulance skidded and crashed into the tollgate.
The vehicle swerved, crashed and then overturned, throwing the patient and others out of the vehicle. CCTV cameras captured the accident. All the injured were rushed to the hospital. Toll gate staffer Shambhaji Gorpade who rushed to remove the barricades suffered injuries but is said to be out of danger. The driver of the ambulance has been identified as Roshan. Byndoor police visited the spot and an investigation is under way.
