  • Princess Charlene accompanied Prince Albert when he attended the 73rd Monaco Red Cross Ball Gala on Monday.
  • The event has been coined "the biggest social event on the European calendar".
  • The princess missed last year's event amid her recovery in South Africa, but sparkled as she made her return in a crystal-embroidered Prada gown.

Princess Charlene attended the Red Cross Gala alongside husband, Prince Albert, earlier this week.

The royal wore an ice blue satin Prada gown embroidered with crystals to the event that usually marks the end of Monaco's social season.

The Red Cross Gala was started in 1948 by Prince Albert's father, Prince Rainier, as a formal wear evening of entertainment. Grace Kelly, however, took over the event and turned it into something else entirely, People reports.

"Until Grace," one attendee once recalled, "it was an evening designed to stare at other people's jewellery."

It became a night of true glitz and glamour, with showstopping performances from stars including Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra; writer Jeffrey Robinson called it "the biggest social event on the European calendar".

This year, Alicia Keys took to the stage, while Prince Albert celebrated his 40th anniversary as president, taking over after his mother's death.

Princess Charlene, who missed the event-turned-concert last year while recovering in South Africa, enjoyed the evening for the first time as Madame Vice President.
