Police found 57-year-old Samantak Das, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, hanging from a ceiling fan inside his room at his house in Kolkata’s NSC Bose Road.
Police said he was hanging with the help of a piece of cotton belt used for Karate. Police took him to MR Bangur Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
During the inquiry, police found that he had been suffering from mental depression due to a family dispute.
“ On Wednesday afternoon, his housemate called him repeatedly, but he did not open his room's door, which was bolted from inside,” police said.
“After getting no response, his family members informed the police,” an official said.
“Police broke his room’s door and found him hanging,” he said.
No complaint has been received yet. An autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the reason for the death.
