NRC only after securing data: Govt to Lok Sabha

GUWAHATI: The list of inclusions and exclusions for Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be made available to the Centre, state government and the Registrar General of India (RGI) only after an Aadhar-like security regime is enacted to secure the data, Union minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
A source said the office of the Assam state coordinator of NRC has submitted a proposal to the RGI for creation of an Aadhaar-like regime for securing NRC data, as directed by the Supreme Court.
Rai on Tuesday, in a written reply to a question of Congress MP Abdul Khaleque, said, “The Supreme Court has directed the state coordinator of NRC, Assam, to enact an appropriate security regime on the lines similar to the security regime provided for Aadhaar data and only thereafter the list of inclusions and exclusions shall be made available to the state government, central government and Registrar General of India.”
NRC data securing regime project may cost Rs 18 crore: Official
Rai said following Supreme Court directions , the supplementary list of inclusions and exclusions for National Register of Citizens , Assam have been published on 31st August, 2019.
A senior official said, "A detailed proposal is submitted and it will take six to seven months for completion. The project may cost Rs 18 crore. The proposal is yet to be approved by the RGI."
Rai said, "Any person who is not satisfied with the outcome of the decisions of claims and objections under supplementary list as per Clause 7 of the Schedule appended to the Citizenship Rules, 2003 may prefer an appeal before the designated Foreigners Tribunals within a period of 120 days from the date of such order".
On August 13, 2019, the Supreme Court had stated that "in so far as the prayer of the learned state co-ordinator with regard to maintenance of security of NRC data is concerned, we direct that an appropriate regime be enacted on lines similar to the security regime provided for Aadhaar data."
