Mangaluru: Leader of opposition in legislative council, B K Hariprasad, has urged the government to compensate families who lost properties due to floods and natural calamities.
He was speaking after visiting Gurupura, Mugerkudru in Adyapadi, Meenakalya and various places in Ullal on Tuesday. He said the government should immediately resettle those who lost their homes due to natural calamities. “The compensation, which is being distributed by the district administration through tahsildars is meagre, and not sufficient for the families. The government should announce packages whenever people suffer losses due to natural calamities,” Hariprasad said.
He said that two persons had died, and several houses were damaged completely, due to rain at Mulur near Gurupur, two years ago. Though the government had distributed ex gratia to the kin of those who died in the tragedy, no measures were taken to rebuild houses, even after the land had been identified. He demanded that the government help these families.
During his visit to Mugerkudru and Adyapady, people narrated their grievances. Farmers of Mugerkudru said that they have lost hundreds of acres of agricultural land, due to the unscientific construction of a dam at Maravoor. People also brought to the notice of the MLC, that a road at Meenakalya was washed away due to sea erosion, and several houses are on the verge of collapse. Deputy leader of opposition in legislative assembly U T Khader, former MLA B A Mohiuddeen Bava, and Congress leaders Prathibha Kulai and Shashidhar Hegde were present.
