  • A 31-year-old crew member of Law & Order was fatally shot on set in Brooklyn.
  • According to NYPD, the victim was saving parking spots in preparation for filming when an unknown assailant shot and killed him.
  • Investigators are now searching for the gunman and a motive.

A 31-year-old man who was working for the production crew of the NBC show Law & Order: Organised Crime has been shot and killed.

The victim – identified as 31-year-old Johnny Pizarro of Queens – was saving parking spots early on Tuesday morning as he was assigned to parking enforcement by the production company when an unknown assailant allegedly fired a weapon, hitting Pizarro's neck and head, CNN reports.

According to NYPD spokesperson Det. Sophia Mason, the assailant ran off while emergency responders rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where he could not be saved.

Investigators are now searching for the gunman and a motive.

In the wake of Pizarro's killing, Variety spoke to several friends and community members near the crime scene. Cisco, a co-worker of Pizarro, was shocked by the incident and said Pizarro was dedicated to the six children he was raising in Ridgewood, Queens.

"He was a good guy, not a troublemaker," Cisco said. "This is the safest neighbourhood out of all the five boroughs. New York City is unpredictable."

In a statement, NBC and Universal Television said they were "terribly saddened and shocked to hear that one of [their] crew members was the victim of a crime and has died as a result".

"We are working with local law enforcement as they continue to investigate. Our hearts go out to his family and friends, and we ask that you respect their privacy during this time," the statement reads.

According to Deadline, Law & Order: Organised Crime is currently filming its third season.
