Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) started trial run of night sweeping in ward 40 from Tuesday.
The ward has VIP areas as well two big markets — Unit-I and Unit-II. The trial run of manual sweeping will also cover Unit-III residential areas. If the BMC succeeds in the trial run, the practice will be adopted in rest of the wards.
BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation) Suvendu Sahu said 45 sanitary workers (sweepers), eight supervisors and two tractors will be deployed for night sweeping. “We have announced in those areas that night sweeping will be carried out. It will cover the area from Keshari cinema hall to Forest Park. The sweeping will start from 7.30 pm and conclude at 11.30 pm,” he said.
He added that when people go for morning walks they should breathe fresh air without the stink of littered garbage. Night sweeping is also convenient because there would be less traffic on roads, he said. Currently, most of the major arteries are cleaned by mechanical sweeping vehicles that carry out the exercise from 10 pm. These vehicles are mainly dust suckers.
