DIBRUGARH: A body was found floating in a tributary of the Kumey river in
Arunachal Pradesh's Kurung Kumey district on Monday and it's suspected to be one of the 19 labourers from Assam engaged in a BRO road project who had disappeared two weeks ago from their remote worksite in the China-bordering district.
According to Kurung Kumey DC Bengia Nighee, authorities were informed on July 13 by a BRO contractor that 19 of 30 workers had fled their camp at Damin, about 200km from district headquarters Koloriang, on July 5.
The migrant labourers' flight from their camp remains a mystery. There are reports that the workers may've run away after being denied leave to go home for Eid or because of alleged shortage of ration in the camp. "The labourers might have ventured deep inside the forests," the DC said Tuesday.
The puzzle is likely to be solved when a police team, along with an executive magistrate and medics, reach the place where the body has been found. "It's a difficult and dangerous terrain. There are plenty of poisonous snakes. It is possible the person may have died of a snakebite," he said.
The medical team will conduct an autopsy at the spot as it would be difficult to carry the body back to Koloriang.
The DC said the workers were brought by two or three sub-contractors from Assam.
