NEW DELHI: Two gangsters were killed while three policemen sustained injuries in an encounter between Punjab Police and criminals, believed to be involved in the killing of singer Sidhu Moosewala, in Amritsar district.
The encounter was reported from Hoshiar Nagar village near Attari International border. The gangsters have been identified as Manpreet Mannu and Jagrup Rupa,
"Heavy exchange of fire took place today, two gangsters involved in Sidhu Moose Wala case namely Jagroop Singh Roopa & Manpreet Singh killed. 3 police officials have also suffered minor injuries,"
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav told reporters.
"We were keeping track of the accused in the Sidhu Moose Wala murder case and our task force saw some movement in this area. We acted upon it. Our forensic team is at the spot for further investigation," he added.
An AK47 and a pistol have been recovered from the gangsters.
Police teams from Anti-Gangster Task Force, State Special Operation Cell and Organized Crime Control Unit have cordoned off the area. Announcements have been made by local Gurdwara asking people to stay indoors.
Police sources said the gangsters were also asked to surrender but they opened fire at police.
