GURUGRAM: He had his plans sorted. Deputy superintendent of police Surender Singh Bishnoi (57), who was due to retire in four months, was planning to visit his son and grandchildren settled in Canada.
Originally from Sarangpur village in Hisar, Singh had joined the police service as an assistant sub-inspector in 1994. On Tuesday, he was mowed down by a dumper carrying stones from an illegal mining site in the Aravalis when he intercepted the vehicle and asked the driver to stop at Pachgaon village of Nuh.
Inspector Dharam Singh recalled his three months with the “jovial” man at the Tauru (city) police station in Nuh. “He (Singh) was extremely jolly and a dedicated man — always on his toes and hardworking. Whenever he had any tip-off, he would visit the spot himself. He was such a brave heart,” said Dharam Singh, as he waited for the DSP’s body at the community health centre in Nuh, on Tuesdayy.
After returning from Canada, Singh wanted to spend his retired life in his village in Hisar, he had told some of his close colleagues.
“Since he was in the police force and on duty most of the time, he would hardly get to meet people. So, he was looking forward to meeting his son Siddharth and grandchildren in Canada. He would then spend his retired life in the village. When at home, he would never talk about work and would always crack jokes. He would keep everyone happy around him,” said nephew Dinesh, who had come to receive the body.
Another nephew, Sunil, was with him. “I had spoken to uncle on Monday and he said he would come home in 2-3 days. He is now gone forever. He was the pillar of the family,” sobbed Sunil (30).
Singh is survived by his wife and two children. His daughter works with a bank in Bengaluru while his son is in Canada.
“On Monday, I got a call from Siddharth saying he had booked the tickets for himself to celebrate his retirement. He asked me not to tell him because he wanted to give him a surprise. Siddharth has been informed about his father’s death. He is now on the way,” Sunil said. The residents of Tauru have called for a “bandh” on Wednesday to protest the DSP’s killing. All schools and offices in the region will stay shut in solidarity.
