NEW DELHI: The home ministry on Tuesday said it does not maintain specific data with respect to arrests of journalists, adding that the matter falls under the purview of the state governments since ‘police’ and ‘public order’ are ‘State’ subjects under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India.
Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, MoS (home) Nityanand Rai said the state governments were responsible for the prevention, detection and investigation of crimes and for prosecuting criminals through their law enforcement agencies. “NCRB does not maintain specific data with respect to arrest of journalists,” he said.
