Surat: Surat, the man-made fibre capital of the country, is to get a major boost with the 75th Independence Day as the city has got orders to make nearly 10 crore national flags.
The city has got a major advantage with polyester getting an approval to be used as a material in the tricolour.
As part of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav celebrations planned by the central government, the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign has been launched to hoist tricolour at every house in the country between August 13 to 15.
Recently, a team of the union textile ministry and the central government visited the city to examine the possibility of production of 10 crore tricolours. The team was assured by manufacturers supplying the required product in time. “Surat is the only centre in the country that can supply a huge quantity of polyester-finished products. After the central government, the local manufacturers are now getting orders from state governments as well,” said Sanjay Sarawagi, managing director, Laxmipati Group.
Sarawagi has got orders to make 50 lakh flags and is getting inquiries from many other parties.
Manoj Goyal, a political campaign material manufacturer, has received orders for 50 lakh national flags. He claims that making the cloth and dyeing is not an issue but giving it a complete look of the national flag should be done accurately with proper stitching.
“The orders are pouring in, and apart from making 50 lakh flags, I am coordinating to get 50 lakh more through other manufacturers. The time is limited but we are trying our level best,” said Goyal.
Apart from manufacturers, textile traders are also receiving orders from across the country. “Some big orders are going to manufacturers directly but there are a number of traders who are receiving orders of one to 5 lakh flags,” said Narendra Saboo, president of Surat Mercantile Association.
