Coimbatore: The postmortem of a 19-year-old engineering student, who died on Wednesday near Eachanari in Coimbatore district, revealed that he died of drug overdose. The boy injected psychotropic pain killer drugs.
Police said the deceased, S Ajay Kumar, a native of Ramanathapuram district, was pursuing a second-year BE course in a private college near Eachanari in the district. He was staying at the college hostel.
On Wednesday, Ajay was found unconscious at his hostel room and was rushed to a hospital. He died later in the hospital.
The rural police registered a case under Section 174 CrPC (unnatural death). Police received his postmortem report on Saturday and found that he died of drug overdose. He injected the drug into a vein using a syringe, the report said.
Police initiated an inquiry to identify the drug supplier. On Sunday night, police arrested A Mohammad Bazeer, 52, a pharmacist from Kumbakonam, in connection with the case. He was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and lodged in a prison.
