SC to hear on Jul 20 pleas pertaining to Maharashtra political crisis
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on July 20 a batch of pleas pertaining to the recent political crisis in Maharashtra that led to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state. The turmoil began with a rebellion in the Shiv Sena following which Uddhav Thackeray resigned as chief minister on June 29. A day later, rebel Sena leader Eknath Shinde took oath as chief minister with the BJP as his partner.

Yellow alert for Mumbai today; water stock in lakes at 82%
Even as rain subsided in Mumbai over the weekend and in most parts of the state, a yellow alert has been issued for the city for Monday. Besides, two more deaths in rain-related incidents - one each in Jalgaon and Amravati districts - were reported on Sunday, taking the toll in Maharashtra so far this season to 104, said a government disaster management cell's report. However, the wet spell in the city over the past two weeks has brough much cheer as lake levels are now at 82% of the required quantum, with three lakes having already overflowed.

Two Metro 3 cars ready for dispatch
The first two metro cars for Metro 3 underground corridor (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz)are loaded on road trailers ready for dispatch at ALSTOM’s trains manufacturing plant in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd plans to initiate trial runs with this prototype rake in August.
‘Cyber crime, terrorism main challenges before Mumbai cops’
City police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar has said tackling terrorism and cyber crime are the major challenges for the city police, but efforts are on to keep the metropolis safe and terror-free. The security of women, children, senior citizens and deprived sections is the Mumbai Police’s priority, Phansalkar, who recently took charge as the city top cop, said.
Covid deaths cross 100-mark in Maharashtra in July
The Covid-19 toll for July in the state crossed the 100-mark on Sunday for the first time in four months. Deaths due to coronavirus have remained under 100 since the Omicron-driven wave declined in February. The July fatalities, however, are nowhere close to the numbers seen in January (1085) and February (1090). There have been 101 deaths in July, with an addition of three on Sunday. Although a surge in cases has been seen since June, deaths have shown amarginal uptick in July. As per the state’s daily report, there were 77 deaths in March, 60 in April, 18 in May and 65 in June. Mumbai accounts for a fifth of the July deaths.
