Nagpur: One killed as live shell explodes at scrap dealer’s shop

NAGPUR: One person was killed and another sustained grievous injuries when a shell exploded while cutting scrap material with a gas cutter in Kapsi area under the jurisdiction of Pardi police station in Nagpur.

The deceased has been identified as Guddu Bhabutlal Ratnere (52, a resident of Yogi Arvindnagar, Uppalwadi), while the injured Sumit Sukarlal Maraskolhe (19, a native of Chhindwara, presently residing in Dipti Signal), is being undergoing treatment in a private hospital.
Preliminary probe by city police revealed that one Abdul Rashid owns a scrap warehouse named AR Traders in Baradwari area.
On May 30, he purchased scrap and spent shells from the ordnance factory godown at Pulgaon in Wardha district. These shells and other materials were stored in warehouses. On Monday evening, Guddu and Sumit were cutting iron shells with a gas cutter when one of the shells exploded.
Fear gripped the area in the evening when a blast took place inside the shop of a scrap dealer resulting in damage to his shop and also killing Guddu on the spot.
A police team, including senior police inspector Manohar Kotnake of Pardi police station reached there. The police admitted the injured to the hospital. Guddu was declared brought dead by the doctor.
Even the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad of Nagpur city police was also visited the spot after this incident.
Pardi police are investigating how many shells Rashid brought from Pulgaon.
