HYDERABAD: Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Sunday sprang a conspiracy theory behind the unprecedented floods sweeping the state, alluding to purported global machinations to trigger cloudbursts in the Godavari catchment area, like in Uttarakhand and Leh. Floods have rendered thousands homeless and wrecked properties of thousands of crores of rupees in and around Bhadrachalam town.
The CM referred to the phenomenon of cloudburst, which causes very heavy rainfall within a short time, saying "some countries are involved in engineering cloudbursts over parts of India".
After surveying the flood situation in the worst-hit Bhadradri Kothagudem district, the chief minister said, "The unprecedented crisis in Telangana could have been sparked off by cloudbursts. We don't know how far global conspiracy theories are true, but experts say incessant rain can also be a result of climate change."
The CM also interacted with flood-affected families in relief camps in Bhadrachalam. Weather officials described a cloudburst as extreme precipitation in a short time accompanied by hail and thunder that dumps large amounts of water in a certain area.
The CM said, the dam on Kadem river, a tributary of Godavari, in Nirmal district miraculously withstood the floods. "It is god's grace that the dam survived. Its maximum water discharge capacity is 2.90 lakh cusecs, but during this flood, the level touched 5lakh cusecs and it's still standing. Thankfully, not many lives were lost," he said.
