Nagpur: It was a perfect Sunday for hundreds of foodies who gathered at Vishnuji Ki Rasoi to witness a world record by master chef Vishnu Manohar in the presence of officials from various books of records.
From 9am to 2pm, Manohar entered his name for the 12th time in the book of world records as Nagpurians relished 375 kgs of rice delicacies.
Manohar prepared 75 different dishes from 75 different rice varieties to mark the 75 years of India’s independence. He dedicated the world record to the hard working farmers of India who develop and grow different varieties of rice.
It wasn’t just a record, it was a multifaceted event. Visitors got the opportunity to see, touch, taste and get detailed information about many lesser-known varieties of rice grown by farmers. Many of these varieties were specially developed and grown by farmers at individual levels.
While the chef and his team were preparing dishes, renowned singers, performers, and celebrities gave scintillating performances to entertain visitors.
“We completed the record feat 15 minutes before time. I prepared the 75th dish by using a variety which was specially developed by my farmer friend Vijay Jathe and his team. They have named this variety ‘Vishnu Amrut rice’ after me. I’m honured,” said Manohar.
The who’s who of Nagpur, right from district collector R Vimala and many other attended the event and encouraged the team during the five-hour record feat.
“He meticulously selected different delicacies of different states. We had kobi bhat, fodnicha bhat, bhaja bhat and wada bhat from Maharashtra; tomato rice, fried rice, potato rice, sweetcorn rice from the continental list; amti bhat, rassam bhat, sambar bhat from south while rajma chawal and chhole chawal from the north,” said Vijay Jathe from the organizing team.
“Even an expert foody cannot name more than 10-15 varieties of rice. Here, we got 75 of them to see and taste. The list of 75 types of rice dishes had some names like bambooshoot rice, pawta bhat, lobia chawal that we heard for the first time,” said Mrunmayee Kulkarni.
