(Express photo by Renuka puri)With Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging MPs to hold intense debates with an open mind for a fruitful session, Lok Sabha met for the Monsoon Session on Monday but was adjourned after 20 minutes to ensure that all MPs cast their votes for the presidential election. Voting is underway for the election of India’s next President and will continue till 5 pm.
“This session is also important because elections for the office of President and Vice-President are taking place right now. Voting (for the Presidential election) is taking place today. During this period, the new President and Vice-President will begin guiding the nation,” Modi said.
“There should be dialogue in the Parliament with an open mind, if necessary, there should be a debate. I urge all MPs to contemplate deeply and discuss,” PM Modi added. In his customary remarks before the media on the opening day of the session, the Prime Minister said the Parliament functions and takes the best decisions with everyone’s efforts and urged parliamentarians to make full use of this session.

Three new members – Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi (Rampur), Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirahua (Azamgarh) and Shatrughan Sinha (Asansol) – took oath as MPs on the floor of the House while Simranjit Singh Mann (Sangrur) was sworn in inside the chamber of the Lok Sabha Speaker. Sources said Mann, who belongs to SAD (Amritsar), had made a special request in this regard.
Before adjourning the house till 2 pm, Speaker Om Birla paid tributes to deceased former members of the House and to former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe who was shot dead during an election campaign earlier this month.
After the oath-taking, Congress MPs, who came prepared with banners on rising inflation, rose from their seats. Party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury tried to raise the issue, but the Speaker adjourned the proceedings till 2 pm.
