The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday accused the Congress of targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi through activist Teesta Setalvad and said Congress party president Sonia Gandhi was the driving force behind the conspiracy to implicate the then Gujarat chief minister in the 2002 riots case.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra alleged that Gandhi, acting through her political advisor, the late Ahmed Patel, tied to destabilise the state government and defame Modi.
The allegation came after the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has arrested Setalvad, claimed in a court affidavit that she was part of a larger conspiracy hatched by Patel to get the state government dismissed after the 2002 riots.
Citing the SIT affidavit, Patra claimed that Setalvad was given Rs 30 lakh by Patel.
