GUWAHATI: Eleven higher educational institutions from the northeast, headed by the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G), got ranks in the top-100 in various categories in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2022.

From the northeast, IIT-G achieved the best rank by occupying the seventh position in ‘Engineering’ and the eighth rank in the ‘Overall’ category. The premier technology institute has been ranked the same as last year in both the categories. In the “Engineering” category, besides IIT-G, NIT Silchar (38th rank) is the only institution from the NE to get a rank in the top-100.
Indian Institute of Management Shillong has been ranked 26 th among the management category institutions, while National Law University and Judicial Academy, Kamrup achieved 24 th rank among the law institutions that participated in the NIRF 2022.
In the “Overall” category, Gauhati University (GU) with 64th rank has the second best rank from the northeast. NIT Silchar and Tezpur University (TU) are the other two institutions to get a berth in the top-100 in the “Overall” ranking with 76th and 90th positions respectively.
In the “University” category, GU is on the top from NE with 36th rank, followed by TU (59th rank), the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong (66th rank) and Mizoram University (78th rank).
At 45th rank, Pachhunga University College, Aizawl in Mizoram is the only college to get a rank in the TOP-100 of “College” category from the northeast. In the “Pharmacy” category, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Guwahati and Dibrugarh University got the 13th and 47th ranks respectively. NIT Silchar got the 50th rank in the “Research” category. Started in 2015, NIRF outlines a methodology to rank higher educational institutions in the country. The parameters used broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcome,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception.”
IIT-G director T G Sitharam said the performance of the institute directly reflects the contribution of the students and the faculty members and we will continue to support their efforts.
