NOIDA: After an exchange of fire, police arrested a 36-year-old man on Friday morning in Sector 68 for allegedly throwing acid on a woman (38) in the Phase 3 area of Noida on Thursday night.
According to the police investigation, the accused, Vikas, was previously in a relationship with the victim and suspected she was now with another man.
Police said the accused and the victim, both from the Badaun district, stayed in rented accommodations in the Mamura village.
“On Thursday night around 9 pm when the woman, who works at a garment factory in Sector 63, was returning home from work, a man allegedly threw acid on her face near Transport Nagar and fled the spot. The woman's roommate reached the spot after the locals in the area alerted her,” said Harish Chandar, deputy commissioner for police, Central Noida.
Police said they also got information about the attack from the locals.
“The woman was immediately rushed to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for treatment. She has sustained 30-32% burns on her face, neck and feet and is currently under treatment. A team from the Phase 3 police station started looking for the attacker and tracked him down in Sector 68 on Friday morning,” said Chandar.
After spotting Vikas on a motorcycle in Sector 68, police asked him to stop.
“But he tried to escape and opened fire on the police team. During retaliatory firing by cops, he got hit on his leg. He was then taken to a hospital for treatment. During interrogation, he revealed that he was in a relationship with the victim, and they had lived together for three years in Mumbai,” said the DCP, adding that the couple allegedly had a tiff a year ago. The woman then arrived in Noida to work at a factory.
“The accused also followed her and rented a flat in the same locality where she was. Since the past few months, Vikas has been putting pressure on her to reconcile with and live with him. He got miffed when he found out that the woman was in a relationship with another man,” the officer said.
Later, the accused bought a car battery and used the battery water, which is acidic, to attack the woman, said ACP-1 Central Noida Abdul Qadir.
Police have lodged an FIR against Vikas under Indian Penal Code Section 326A (acid attack) and said further legal proceedings are on.
