KOLKATA: Jadavpur University has bagged the fourth position and Calcutta University eighth among all the varsities in the country in the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2022 (NIRF 22). Among state-run universities countrywide, JU is at Number 1 spot and CU at Number 2. In 2021, CU had finished fourth and JU eighth.
In the ranking for colleges, St Xavier's College has earned the highest position from the state, ranking eighth, followed by Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur, at ninth, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College, Rahara, at 13th and Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur, at 19th.
St Xavier's principal Fr Dominic Savio said, "I feel honoured and vindicated with the latest NIRF ranking. The college has consistently been placed among the top 10 colleges in the country." RMK Vivekananda Centenary College principal Swami Kamalasthananda said, "We are feeling proud that we are improving. Last year, our rank was 15 and this year, 13. We are giving full effort with the help of our students, teachers and non-teaching staff."
Overall, IIT-Madras has topped the NIRF 22 and IIT-Kharagpur bagged the sixth spot. JU has ranked 12th overall and CU 15th. The list for research institutes is headed by IISc Bengaluru, with IIT-Kgp finishing fifth, JU 13th and IIEST 40h. JU has also performed well in engineering (11th) and pharmacy (18th). JU vice-chancellor Suranjan Das said, "It is a proud moment for us because we act as a team. It's a reflection of high standards that higher education in Bengal has been attaining. Despite all the difficulties, we as a state-run university, are competing with centrally-funded universities. If JU, CU and other rank-holding institutes join hand and work as a tool, Bengal can contribute better in the development of higher education."
CU V-C Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee also expressed satisfaction: "Any success is a stepping stone for further initiatives. NIRF ranking is indicative of the collective zeal of our teachers, researchers, employees and students. The whole fraternity of ours feels inspired by the recognition..."
Apart from St Xavier's and three RKM colleges, three others from the state also figured on the NIRF top-100. Of them Bethune College, which ranked 74th this time, up from last year's 77th, is the only government institute. Principal Krishna Roy said, "It is an honour that we are the only government college among country's top 100 and we performed better than last year." Raja Narendra Lal Khan Women's College, Midnapore ranked 73rd and Midnapore College 97th.
Congratulating the institutes, chief minister Mamata Banerjee wrote on social media: "Proud that, according to NIRF 22 India Ranking, Jadavpur University & Calcutta University are at first and second positions among all State aided Universities in India. Among colleges, St Xavier's is 8th in the country. Congratulations to our academic fraternity & students."
Among central institutes here, IIEST bagged the 66th place in overall rankings, followed by NIT Durgapur at 72nd. Visva-Bharati has ranked 98th among central universities. Burdwan University has bagged 87th rank. IIM Calcutta is third on management school list and International Management Institute, Kolkata, 59th.
