Guwahati: The government railway police on Friday seized gold worth over Rs 50 lakh, which was smuggled from Myanmar and was en-route to Delhi, from the Rajdhani Express at Guwahati Railway Station. One person has been arrested.
Prasenjit Das, officer in-charge of GRP station, said accused Vishal Sukhdeo, who hails from Delhi, brought the smuggled gold by bus to Guwahati, where he boarded the Rajdhani Express for Delhi. “During routine checking, we interrogated him on suspicion and recovered the 822 gram gold from his possession. He could not produce any valid document to support the gold. Further course of action is being followed,” he added. He said the items smuggled through the Indo-Myanmar international border enter Guwahati either through Nagaland from Manipur or through Meghalaya. On May 12, the directorate of revenue intelligence, during an operation called ‘Gold on the Highway’, seized 96 pieces of foreign-origin gold biscuits worth Rs 8.38 crore smuggled through the Indo-Myanmar international border from Guwahati and Dimapur.
