Silchar: A 28-year-old man was arrested and heroin worth around Rs 4 crore was seized by police from a car at Kathalgul in Karimganj on Thursday.
The accused, Aftar Hussain, is a cousin brother of former minister and current South Karimganj MLA Siddique Ahmed. Aftar is the son of former president of Dholcherra GP Abdul Sukkur.
A senior police officer said on Friday that based on specific information, a team of policemen, led by officer-in-charge of Baroigram police outpost Jyotish Kumar Nath, laid a trap at Kathalgul, about 30km from Karimganj, along the Indo-Bangladesh international border, on Thursday evening and accosted a Bolero, before conducting a search.
While Aftar was held, around 477 grams of heroin in 39 small boxes were seized by the cops. The market value of the drugs is estimated around Rs 4 crore, the official said. Superintendent of police (Karimganj) Padmanabh Baruah, who rushed to the spot, said that the car carrying the contraband was being smuggled from neighbouring Mizoram for the purpose of the illicit trade. Following his interrogation by the police, a Karimganj court sent Aftar to jail on Friday.
Meanwhile, the SP said a drive against smuggling and consumption of drugs had been launched over the past one year and that police had achieved major success in containing it. Reacting to the incident, Siddique Ahmed claimed that the arrested man was his “distant relative” and he should be punished as per the law. He said Aftar was a “drug addict” and he had been to de-addiction centres multiple times.
